Speed Lab

Three sessions a week with one job: make you a faster skater.

Off-ice strength, power and sprint training built for hockey players and goalies, ages 12 through junior. Tested when you start, tested every six weeks, so you see the number move.

  • 3 Sessions a week
  • 60 Minutes each
  • 12+ Players and goalies
  • 6 wk Retest cycle

Why you're not getting faster

More ice time won't fix it.

Hockey speed is the first three strides, a 15-foot race to a loose puck, a crossover that creates a step of separation. That comes from how much force you can put into the ice and how fast you can put it there. Practice doesn't train that. The gym does.

  • 01
Speed is power. How high and how far a player can jump tracks closely with how fast they skate. Build the engine and the stride follows.
  • 02
Loud feet are slow feet. Most "speed drills" are conditioning in disguise. Real speed work is short, full-effort, fully rested, and coached rep by rep.
  • 03
In-season is when it slips. Games and practices break you down. Three structured sessions a week keep strength and speed climbing through March instead of fading by December.

A week in the lab

Three sessions. Three jobs.

Every session is coached, every rep has a purpose, and the three days stack on each other. Miss one and you still get faster. Hit all three and it shows up on Saturday.

Day 01 · Force

Build the engine

Heavy, well-coached strength work for the muscles that push you down the ice.

  • Squats, split squats and hinges for stride power
  • Single-leg strength because skating is one leg at a time
  • Trunk and hip stability so the force actually reaches the blade

Day 02 · Power

Make it fast

Turn strength into explosiveness: the ability to put force into the ice in a split second.

  • Jumps, bounds and plyometrics for a quicker first step
  • Med ball throws and sled work for horizontal drive
  • Olympic-lift variations scaled to the athlete

Day 03 · Speed

Put it on the ice

Sprint mechanics and change of direction, coached at full effort with full rest.

  • Acceleration starts from the positions hockey puts you in
  • Lateral starts and crossover mechanics for separation
  • Repeat-sprint work so you're still fast on your last shift
In-season ready

We program around your schedule. Game tomorrow? The session changes. Tournament weekend? We taper you into it. The goal is to show up to games fresher and faster, not sore.

We measure it

If it isn't tested, it's a guess.

Every athlete is tested in week one and retested every six weeks on the same four numbers. You'll know exactly how much faster you are, and so will we.

10 yd Acceleration sprint. The first three strides, timed.
Broad jump Horizontal power. The closest gym number to skating speed.
Vertical Lower-body power output, tracked over the season.
5-10-5 Change of direction. Stop, plant, go.

Built for the game

Faster to the puck. Faster out of the corner. Faster in the third.

Speed Lab athletes win more races, protect the puck better, and don't fade late. That's the whole point. The gym numbers are just how we prove it.

Who it's for

Players and goalies, 12 through junior.

Skaters

Forwards and D who are tired of losing footraces, getting knocked off pucks, or hearing "needs to get faster" on every evaluation. This is the fix.

Goalies

Same engine, goalie-specific tweaks: lateral power, push and recovery speed, hip strength. Coached by a former pro goalie who trains like one.

Youth (12 to 14)

Coordination, sprint mechanics and bodyweight strength first. Loads go up when the movement earns it, never before.

High school and junior

Heavier strength, higher-intent power work, and testing numbers you can put in front of a coach or a scout.

Who's coaching

Pro-level coaching, not a workout app.

Speed Lab is led by Dr. Jamie Phillips, a former professional goalie and Winnipeg Jets draft pick who played NCAA Division I at Michigan Tech before earning his Doctorate of Physical Therapy and CSCS. The Ghost strength staff coaches every session in small groups, so nobody is left guessing on a rep.

  • DPT, CSCS
  • Former pro goalie
  • NHL, AHL and NCAA athletes trained
  • Small-group coaching

Questions

What parents and players ask.

Won't three gym sessions a week wear my player out during the season?

Not the way we run it. In-season sessions are shorter on volume and higher on intent, and we adjust around game days and tournament weekends. Most athletes report feeling fresher, not more tired, because they're finally recovering and building instead of only breaking down.

Is 12 too young for this?

No. Twelve-year-olds train movement, sprint mechanics, and bodyweight strength first. Loading goes up only when the movement is clean. Every group is coached by a strength professional, not left to a sheet of exercises.

Is Speed Lab for goalies too?

Yes. Goalies train in the same sessions with position-specific adjustments: lateral power, push and recovery speed, and hip strength. Jamie is a former pro goalie, so goalie-specific work is built into the program, not bolted on.

How fast will I see results?

Most athletes feel the difference in their first step inside the first few weeks. The retest at six weeks is where you see it in numbers. Speed is a skill that compounds, so the players who stay for the season get the most out of it.

What do I need to bring?

Training shoes, a water bottle, and clothes you can sprint in. Everything else is here.

Can I cancel?

Yes. Speed Lab is month to month after your free week. No long-term contract.
